Abstract

This study focuses on derivation from verb forming noun found in Revenge Wears Prada novel written by Lauren Weisberger. The aim of this study is to find out kind of suffixes used in forming noun from verb by applying the theory of nominal suffixes proposed by Plag (2003). The data were taken from novel entitled Revenge Wears Prada which was written by Lauren Weisberger. Observation method was used in collecting the data with several steps applied such as reading, note taking, and classifying technique continue with the theory of nominal suffixes proposed by Plag. There were 236 data using suffixes which form noun from verb, those data using suffixes -age, -al, -ance, -ant, -ee, -er/-or, -ing, -ion, and -ment. Moreover, several suffixes used repeatedly in the same word in this novel to form noun class category from different word class and all of these data categorized as class changing process since these morphological processes of verb forming noun has changed the class category of the base form. This study shows that morphology is very important in language since the used of morphological process helps to develop new word from several languages and word classes.

Abstract

The aims of conducting the study are to analyze the types and the structure of endocentric compound found in the novel Betrayal by Danielle Steel. Endocentric compound is type of compound words based on semantics relation between head and modifier. According to Delahunty & Garvey (2010) endocentric is a compound which represents a subtype of whatever the head represents. The source of the data was novel entitled Betrayal written by Danielle Steel and published on July 2012. This study used theory by Carstairs-McCarthy (2002) to analyze the types of endocentric compound based on lexical categories and theory by Lieber (2009) to identify the structure of compound. The study belongs to library research since the data used is a novel. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative qualitative method. This study applied observation method in collecting the data. Based the analysis there are found 71 data of endocentric compounds. They were divided into 60 data of compound noun, 1 data of compound verb and 10 data of compound adjective. The structure of compound presented by using tree diagram and dominantly form by two elements.

Abstract

This study concerned with the derivational process found in the Colours Magazine by Garuda Indonesia. The study aimed to find out the types of derivational process found in the Colours Magazine by Garuda Indonesia. This study collected the data through library research. This study used descriptive quantitative and qualitative method to describe and analyze the data. The theory proposed by Katamba (1993) is used to analyze the types of derivational process and Mc Charty’s (2002) theory is used to analyze how the function of derivational process used in this study. Formal and informal method used to present the data in this study. Based on the result, there were two types of derivational process found in this study namely un-, en- for derivational prefixes and able,-al, -ed, -er, -ful, -ing, -ion, -ity, -ive, -ly, -ment, -y for derivational suffixes. This study found 90 data of derivational affixes. There are 4 data (4.4%) of derivational prefixes and 86 (95.6%) data of derivational suffixes. This study concludes that derivational suffixes is the most dominant type of derivational affixes that found in the Colours Magazine by Garuda Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of the code switching occur in the tweets posted by the Indonesian K-Pop Fans on Twitter. As the phenomenon of code switching in social media is very common nowadays, it makes the writer interested in doing this research. The fifteen data were collected and analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing data, the writer uses the theory proposed by Poplack (1980). The result of this study shows that from fifteen tweets only two types of code switching were found namely inter-sentential switching and intra-sentential switching.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types of slang and the process of creating slang word found in a movie script entitled The Fast and The Furious by Rob Cohen. This study employed descriptive and qualitative method. The data of this study were obtained by watching and taking notes of slang word spoken by the characters in the movie “The Fast and The Furious”. There are two types of slang word, namely primary and secondary, using the theory by Chapman (2007), and in a matter of process of creating slang, the theory by Yule was adopted (1985). The data of this study were obtained by observation method through four steps, namely watching The Fast and The Furious. Next, finding and taking notes of slang words spoken by the characters in the movie The Fast and The Furious. Reading the online movie script and finally, the writer categorized the types of data. There were two types of slang words encountered, namely primary and secondary slang. The result of the study demonstrated that there are 5 slang words found in the movie The Fast and The Furious with 3 primary slang and 2 secondary slang.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of derivational affixes forming noun and the functions of derivational affixes forming noun in the novel entitled Firefly Lane written by Kristin Hannah. The methods used in this study are quantitative and qualitative methods. This study used observation method in collecting the data from all chapters in the novel Firefly Lane. Finally, this writing concludes that there were two functions of derivational affixes such are: class changing affixes and class maintaining affixes and each function has two types which are: prefixes and suffixes. The result of the study found there are 3 prefixes forming noun such are: re-, pre-,and pro-, and from suffixes there were found 22 suffixes forming noun, they are: -er, -hood, -ism, -ist, -ity, -ship, -ness, -th, -ize, -less, -ous, -y, -ful, -ive, -ing, -ance, -ence, -ant, -ion, -ment, - or, and –ure.

Abstract

This study concerns with the code switching found in Cinta Laura's video on her Instagram TV. Descriptive qualitative method is used for analyzing the data from ten videos. This study used the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) about types of code switching and the theory from Hoffman (1991) about the reasons of code switching. This study shows that there are three types of code switching found and six reasons of code switching found. The result of this study shows that intra-sentential switching is the most frequently used in types of code switching and particular topic is the most frequently used in the reasons of code switching. The phenomenon of code switching occurs in many media such as social media. By doing code switching, it is easier to build a sense of solidarity rather than using only one language. Therefore, code switching is an interesting topic to discuss in sociolinguistics research.

Abstract

This research concerns with borrowing words in Indonesian as found in the movie. This research aims at (1) to identify the types of borrowing word; and (2) to identify the adaptations of borrowing words used in Habibie & Ainun movie. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative for analyzing the data. This study used the theory of Haugen in (Grosjean 1982) that was the type and the adaptation of borrowing words. The results showed that there were 2 types of borrowing words found in the data source namely loanword and loan shift. For the adaptation process, there are 2 kinds of adaptation processes found here, namely phonological adaptation and morphological adaptation. The occurrence of pure loan words was dominant compared to the other types. Borrowing words are often found in online and print media such as television, newspapers, magazines, internet, etc. Borrowing words are analyzed in this study to provide knowledge about the existence of word borrowing in Indonesian. The Indonesian borrows many words in English, of course increasing the number of vocabularies in Indonesian.

Abstract

This study has two purposes, those are (1) to find out the types of code-switching used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah in “Daniel Tetangga Kamu” video YouTube channel and 2) to identify the functions of code-switching used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah’s utterances. A qualitative method is used for this study for analyzing the data collected from five videos. The method is applied to give a clear description of the data according to the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) as cited in Romaine (1989: 122) about the three types of code switching. The result of this analysis showed that there was three types of code switching found in this conversation are; Tag switching, intra-sentential switching and inter-sentential switching. Type of code-switching which is intra-sentential switching is the most often used in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah utterances because they was more comfortable when using words, clauses, and phrases in one sentence to convey motivational messages. And the theory proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987) about the six functions of code switching. In this analysis showed that there was six function of code switching are; referential, directive, expressive, phatic, metalinguistic and poetic. Metalinguistic is the dominant function of code-switching in conversation between Daniel Mananta and Raline Shah’s utterances. It occurs because Daniel Mananta and Raline shah wanted to impress the other participants with a show of linguistic skill.

Abstract

This study entitled The Analysis of Slang Language in Song Lyrics in The Bruno Mars 24K Magic Album. The aim of this study is to find out the types of slang words that are used in song lyrics of Bruno Mars. The analysis concerns with the slang word that occur in song lyric by Bruno Mars on nine song such as 24K Magic, Chunky, Perm, That’s What I Like, Versace on the floor, Straight up & down, Calling all my lovelies, Finesse, Too good to say goodbye. The method being used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method and the technique that is being used in this study is observation technique. The theory used in this analysis is theory by Kipfer and Chapman (2007) to find out the kinds of slang words that occur in song lyrics by Bruno Mars on nine songs. The study concludes that the primary slang word is mostly the secondary slang word on Bruno Mars' song lyrics based on nine songs.
